Importance of Bhishma Ekadasi
This day is considered the birthday of the Vishnu Sahasranama. The story that dated back to the era after the epic Mahabharat battle. The Pandava princes were ruling the kingdom. They were victorious, their kingdom was prosperous, and they had all the reasons to feel joyful and content. However, they were not happy within and felt no peace of mind. Lord Krishna asked the Pandavas to go to grandsire Bhishma so as to learn from him. Bhishma asked Krishna as to why He was sending the Pandavas to him. For the Lord could Himself talk to them. Then Krishna explains how, since He was talking, walking and laughing with them, the Pandavas did not realize His true Divinity and hence would not appreciate what He said so much. Therefore, He wanted Bhishma to act as His instrument.
Bhishma chanted the Vishnu Sahasranaama on this day, teaching the Pandavas the Truth about the Lord and inspiring them to rise from the Human level to the Divine level.
Yudhisthira asks Bhisma what a human being needed to do to feel fulfilled, attain peace, and be liberated from the miseries of life. Bhisma as he lay awaiting his death imparted the Visnusahasranama as the answer. According to Bhisma, by singing the 1008 names glorifying lord Visnu everyday with emotion and the heart filled with thoughts of the Lord, a person develops a strong bond with god. A person then attains peace, experiences lasting happiness, and is liberated from the miseries of life. Thus began the tradition of chanting the Sri Visnusahasranama. Devotees of the lord have passed on this tradition for centuries from generation to generation up to this day.
